interesting image ... I'm not certain that I follow the [carved not modelled] meaning, though ... carved out of memory, as opposed to sitting for the image ... or, something else?

now its my turn to be literal

an unfinished sketch that was the potential seed of an idea for a sculpture, and if so, not to be modelled (from clay), but instead, carved from a (laminated) block (of wood), not additive but substractive ...abstraction that starts somewhere...

can one assume that you have any number of (perhaps unfinished?) projects at a given time? this idea, among them?

one can assume two things

...that there are many old images currently being recycled and (not sure why but) it might mean that I am cleaning house or wanting to resolve unfinished business
...but also this, that when the studio dance begins, it is good to have a few projects on the go, to be able to move backandforth between them, that process of while- -one-thing-dries-another-can-be-attended-to

right now, if space permitted, it would be very large canvases, oils, figuative work wrought from this kind of imagery, expressionistic...perhaps I should sell my furniture to make some room...just stretcher frames and hardwood floors...who needs 'stuff'...

wouldn't it be interesting to indulge a passion like that? to minimize to the bare essentials things that populate one's life, in order to concentrate fully on other aspects?

and, in passing, I've noted that few - if any - of the works online use primary colors ... is this chance or design or that what's here is only a select sampling?

[to minimize to the bare essentials things that populate one's life, in order to concentrate fully on other aspects?]...in some ways, even ideal...white walls, wooden floors, smell of inks and oils, and outside, (a body of) water and wonderful light...would that be like living outside of culture or maybe parallel to it?

[few - if any - of the works online use primary colors]
...interesting observation...most don't use colour at all out of love for the richness of blackandwhite, how it allows the eye to focus on form, lineandtexture
... but if colour is used, it has mainly been used arbitrarily, expressionistically, and yes, mainly a palette of secondaries...although I appreciate colour a great deal

and do you play (music) everyday? ..to practice, that is...

...or

perhaps that last question should read differently...
it should ask what your first passion is

...music, or just as likely, travel...?

[would that be like living outside of culture or maybe parallel to it?]

it would be like creating a personal sub-culture, elevating icons of your own choosing, forming values as you saw fit, determining norms ... independent of the outside world, though drawing on [water and wonderful light] and other things that complement it, and from which you draw inspiration.

a world that becomes, like oneself, and the world inside one's mind, a 'moveable feast'.

[and do you play (music) everyday? ..to practice, that is...]

no, though it certainly would enrich daily life; now, I only listen.

curiously, it's neither travel nor music, but rather 'exchange' ... of ideas, from a good mind, with passion and independence and original thought, and probably rather notably, I've often - but not always - encountered these type of people while travelling, which is one of the pleasures of it.

and, I'm sensing an increasing debt here ...

...this is absolutely wonderful
...knowing how hard it is to be [independant of the outside world] in a practical sense

[a world that becomes, like oneself, and the world inside one's mind, a 'moveable feast'.']...this too...remembering 'if you think it is possible or if you think it is not possible, it is true'...to think that the point of life is to make it so, inside and out

[no, though it certainly would enrich daily life; now, I only listen.]...is this a decision not to play or just life getting in the way? (knowing that this may rise my debt but thinking "there is no debt in nothingwithoutjoy" and remembering the notion of a gift economy

and your passion for ['exchange']

which reminds me of a parallel statement/proverb, 'if you know, all has its place; if you don't know, all has its place ...'

[is this a decision not to play or just life getting in the way?]

probably a bit of both; but as well, there are other things that bring me more pleasure, I think.

[and remembering the notion of a gift economy]

I was thinking more along the lines of a vastly increasing trade imbalance ...

which leads me to the following, referenced previously: can you explain the 'da' and 'canadian thanksgiving' and 'scottish' references, and how they pertain to you?

ha...well, and given duty at the border, this might just tip the scales in my favour [I was thinking more along the lines of a vastly increasing trade imbalance ...]

buy low sell high is a good strategy (knowing I could have purchased Nortel at 56)...[can you explain the 'da' and 'canadian thanksgiving' and 'scottish' references, and how they pertain to you?]...but all at once?...the rates increase for double answers...now, don't you regret not addressing the notion of a gift economy?

my grandfather and also my grandmother were both born of Russian immigrants, each raised to speak english, to assimilate, taught to publically deny one's heritage (since being russian and its associated politics was, for a long period of time not a welcome history to carry forward into 20th C North America)
...another alphabet, another way to think

in sharp contrast, another line traces scottish ancestry, but not since the 16th C...leaving me not recently connected...and although it has been a while since I reviewed this history, the story goes that my original relative arrived in Nova Scotia, amazed by its beauty and ready to acquire land to farm...that at some point while doing so, he received word from scotland that he would inherit a vast fortune, on the condition that he return to retrieve it within an immediate period of time...but being struck by the season and its many immediate demands, responed with his regrets, writing that he could not return to collect whatever sum was designated for him since there were potatoes in the fields that required harvesting...

his reevaluation of (what is) wealth, I fear, is something I may have inherited...

for want of a harvest,
for lack of a language,
my ancestral crowds

[buy low sell high is a good strategy (knowing I could have purchased Nortel at 56)]

the exaltation on the upside is never as great as the grief on the downside ... the woulda, coulda, shoulda [strategy] of life and expectations ...

[but all at once?...]

like enjoying it while it's there, eating it while it's warm, drinking it while it's fresh, tasting it while it's still sweet, 'gather[ing] ye rosebuds while ye may ... this same flower that smiles today, tomorrow will be dying ...' yes, I'll take it all at once - and then some, for the moment.

[the notion of a gift economy] does not exclude the idea of imbalances, of gifts that are rec'd or given, and their frequency ... though I'll always graciously accept any gift given ...

[arrived in Nova Scotia, amazed by its beauty]

have you been there, to NS? I understand that it is quite beautiful, though I've never been.

[his reevaluation of (what is) wealth ...]

... interesting idea here, as I ponder that myself.

wise words, all of them
...even these ones (always) make me rethink things
in a different light...I guess my point about gifts was that potentially a gift, by its very nature, incurs no debt...what is freely given expects nothing in return, which is not to say that it won't be returned freely at some point

[have you been there, to NS? I understand that it is quite beautiful, though I've never been] ... yes I have been a few times...it is quite beautiful and its people were incredibly hospitable, the ones I met anyway... I have always wanted to return to cycle the Cabot Trail

I do (did) prefer to be active, to swim, bike etc; and some pursuits are - literally - louder than others, which can be problematic ...

did you do any painting or sketching while in NS? or simply enjoy the time?

admittedly, perhaps not the wisest question I could have asked at this hour in this way...but (however poorly judged on my part) nonetheless motivated with good intent

no I did not do any art while there...just enjoyed the scenery and seafood
